Why is tradition and prioritizing hard work so important to the GOP?

I find them both highly illogical, tradition is ignorance generating, and prioritizing hard work above all else is counterproductive. "Why do things the smart way when you can work hard?", "Thinking is for elitist professors who don't know anything.", "Work harder, not smarter."
