Why is the loud snorer never awakened by his own snoring?

My dad wakes himself up by his own snoring sometimes. but i suppose because when your asleep exspecially a deep sleep your not aware whats going on around you. like if you were wistling you migh not notice after a while but everyone might get really annoyed
