How do I bring up a convo with this super shy guy thats really cute?!?

Theres this guy beside my locker whose a grade older and we have never spoken but I really wanna become friends but I don't know how to bring up a conversation, since he's really quiet and everything. But last year his friend asked me what my name was because in his words "He's too shy to ask you. He likes you. He wants to hook up with you." but I just like blushed and didn't answer. And neither did the dude beside my locker, who looked mortified. So does he like me possibly, or was his friend just messin' around? And how do I bring up a conversation??
