Fable 2: Use portals a lot or take the scenic route?

I haven't played Fable II, but if its anything like the first Fable, then I ume walking would result in a lot of battles with Hobbes, Trolls and whatnot. If you want more experience, then you probably should walk, if you don't then use the portals.
